The green of the woods and the blue of the sky in which the Dolomites it filled my eyes and head. I put my thoughts and plans in order during these holidays. I walked along paths and dirt roads with the intention of reaching a place, a meadow, a peak. Maybe to reach a part of me.
From my mornings of thoughts and glances at enchanted panoramas she was born, the Olang Purse, from the name of the town of Valdaora, in Val Pusteria, which hosted us during a long working holiday. I propose the travel case tutorial with attention to detail, embellished with Sashiko embroidery and by the choice of a combination of fabrics that reminded me of the color of the sky of these enchanted valleys. Olang Purse: a very special creative sewing project.
Materials
(seam allowances are included in the measurements)
- a 20cm zipper;
- two matching cuts of fabric: fabric A 13x24cm – fabric B 9x24cm;
- one piece of fabric for the interior and one piece of padding, each measuring 22x24cm;
- small colored buttons;
- thread and needle to perform the Sashiko stitch by hand;
- 2 pieces of fabric B to cover the ends of the zipper (5x4cm);
- sewing machine with basic stitches;
- walking foot and zipper foot.
The finished size of the Olang Purse is approximately 20x22cm with a base approximately 5cm wide.
Case construction
Embroider, with an alternation of colours, a series of corners in Sashiko stitch, one inside the other, on the strip of plain-coloured fabric. Find an article that explains how to make the Sashiko stitch.
Take the 2 strips of fabric intended for the outside of the case and sew them together from the longest part. Sew them directly onto the padding.
Quilt the unembroidered part as desired and then apply the buttons so that they are sewn onto the padding.
Inserting the zipper
In making the Olang Purse I didn’t cut the fabric of the central body into two pieces, but I applied the zip keeping the whole piece.
First apply the fabric to the 2 ends of the zip as seen in the photo.
On the part that will cover the inside you can apply your personalized label, or write Handmade if your sewing machine allows it.
Now sew the two ends of the fabrics to the zipper proceeding as in the sequence you see in the photo.
Pin the right side to the zip and sew by machine.
Fold the inside fabric on the opposite side and sew to the zip. Do the same thing with the other end of the pencil case.
Then stitch along the zip with the zipper machine sewing foot.
Separate the inside of the case from the outside and sew along the open edges, taking care of leave an open space from which to pull the sewn case right out. Then hand sew the opening with blind stitch.
Making the corners
Realize, always remaining on the reverse side of the project, the corners of the case: 2 for the main body part and 2 for the inside. The width is approximately 5cm.
To the slider of the zip I attached an organza ribbon to the end of which I sewed a small fabric flower: a tulip. Here you will find a tutorial for making small fabric flowers to use to embellish your creative sewing projects or to make key rings.
How are the feet used?
In this tutorial we have seen the use of some presser feet.
There are over 50 different types of presser feet and accessories that you can use to expand the functions of your sewing machine.
