But what could a small and anonymous cut of striped fabric ever become? I have an idea: a capacious all-purpose pochette! Try to make it too: find out how to sew a Fabric Clutch Bag by machine!
Where did the idea of making the Pochette come from?
Months ago, while walking through a flea market, I came across a stall selling used kitchen tablecloths. I like rummaging through piles of tea towels, napkins, more or less colorful tablecloths, kitchen aprons and similar stuff: you never know what you can get your hands on!
So in front of this small cut of lined fabric, for only €0.50, I couldn’t resist and bought it without even knowing what to do with it! And now here’s an easy tutorial for machine sewing a nice multi-purpose clutch bag, very roomy!
Materials for sewing the clutch bag
The necessary materials are:
- cut of lined fabric about 30x50cm
- a trinket and a pair of satin ribbons
- a piece of jeans and some purple cloth
- a white zipper
- adhesive backing for applications
Sewing tutorial
There application preparations in fabric is perhaps the funniest part of the whole project. For this clutch bag I thought of a group of heart-shaped balloons in blue and purple.
Draw 5 hearts on the side of the backing paper of different size. Without steam, iron the shapes of the hearts on the back of the jeans and two pieces of purple and fuchsia American fabric for the inner hearts. Cut out the shapes and, after having removed the paper from the fliseline, place the hearts on the fabric; iron again without steam to stick the applications on the project. At this point with the sewing machine and a dark contrast thread, assembling the appropriate free motion footgo over the edges of the heart-shaped balloons and the threads that are going to wrap around the bottom of the project.
At this point we can move on to packaging of the clutch bag.
Cut out two rectangles of white fabric to sew to the ends of the zip after having taken the measurement with the short side of the scrap of fabric that will make up our pochette. With the appropriate foot, machine sew the zipper on both sides of the pochette, in order to obtain a fabric cylinder.
Turn the clutch bag inside out And on the wrong side sew both sides of the project, then create the bottom by sewing two “ears” or triangles that I didn’t cut, but pinned with some hand-sewn stitches on the bottom.
The Pochette is ready
At this point the multi-purpose clutch bag is ready! To make it even more beautiful tie the pendant to the ribbons in satin after having them passed in the zip cursor.
