This creative sewing project is very fun to do and can be a great way to make an accessory that can decorate our tables in an original way on Christmas Day.
The diameter of the underplate, once finished, is 30 cm.
It is made with 5mm diameter cotton rope, but a thicker rope can also be used.
The project closes with a ring that can be used to hang it as a Christmas decoration, rather than as a placemat.
Materials and tools to make the underplate
- 10 meters of cotton rope with a diameter of 5 mm
- a cardboard disc with a diameter of 20 cm
- a disc of thermoadhesive flizeline with a diameter of 20 cm
- a disc of Christmas fabric with a diameter of 22 cm
- shaded thread for sewing
- open foot
- sewing machine with basic stitches
Prepare the central cloth disc of the underplate
Cut out a circle from Christmas fabric or a decorative panel using cardboard.
Cut out leaving a 1cm margin.
Sew by hand, with running stitch and basting thread, the outline of the fabric circle. Insert the paper pattern and pull the thread to create a margin.
Sew the rope charger
Cut the frayed end of the rope and begin to roll the rope into a spiral to form the center of the charger.
When you reach a diameter of 3 cm, insert pins perpendicularly to keep the turns of rope in place.Insert the pins
With the straight stitch and the standard foot, sew in a radius, then remove the pins.
Attach the open presser foot and select the zigzag stitch.
Place the circle of rope under the presser foot, holding the rope from right to left and begin sewing by joining the turns of rope together until it reaches a diameter of 30 cm.
When the rope has reached the end, fold the end of the rope inwards and sew it to the underplate to form a ring.
Assemble the Christmas placemat
Once you have finished sewing the rope, place the fabric disc in the center of the charger and sew along the perimeter with a zigzag stitch.
Your Christmas charger is finished!
