TUTORIALS
Draw the pattern
To make the shoulder bag, start drawing your paper pattern on cardboard.
The central body is made up of 2 trapeziums joined at the base (folding point of the fabric) where:
- AB=20.5cm plus seam allowance
- DC=18cm plus seam allowance
- OD=12.5cm
The flap, on the other hand, has the base FG=18cm and an asymmetric curve whose highest point (HI) measures 10cm.
Draw the heart with the word LOVE that will form the application.
Cutting the shapes and the application (appliqué)
Using the paper pattern, cut out the fabric and fliseline leaving the seam allowances on the outside.
Draw the heart shape on the double-sided adhesive paper that will become the appliqué of the flap. Iron the fliseline on the fabric that will become the outside of the bag and iron the heart (drawn on the double-sided adhesive paper) on the relative piece of fabric.
The double-sided paper has a smooth side, which is the one on which the shape is drawn in pencil, and a wrinkled side, which is the one on which the solid glue is found. This part must be placed on the fabric and ironed on the drawn side. Both the flizeline and the paper must be ironed without steam.
Apply the decoration on the flap
After sticking the double-sided paper on the fabric, cut out the shape of the heart. Place the heart on the flap, in the desired position, removing the smooth paper. This side of the paper is also adhesive and adheres to the fabric perfectly. So with one erasable pen for fabric draw the word LOVE as shown in the photo.
The motif of the writing and the outline of the heart will be “embroidered” by machine, with a normal straight sewing foot, after having lowered the feed dog of the sewing machine. This way you can practice embroidery free motion going over the writing and the outline of the heart several times. Then iron the decoration to remove the pen marks and sew the two buttons by hand as shown in the photo.
Sew the flap
It starts from the flap. Place the flap with the decoration and the fabric inside it right sides together. Machine sew the curved part leaving the straight side open. Cristiane adds a little glue to the seam of the appliqué buttons to make sure the knot holds.
Turn the flap over and sew (i.e. machine stitch with a straight stitch) the edge. With the pen, mark the application points of the magnetic button and make cuts in correspondence with the marks. At this point the flap is ready.
Sew the lining of the handbag
Before moving on to making the bag, you can sew your own label on the right side of the inner lining to give a touch of personality to your project. Cut the inner lining fabric according to the paper pattern, fold it in two, right sides together, and machine sew the side edges, leaving the 18cm side open and a section of the base to be able to turn the project inside out at the end. Remember, when you stop the seam, to pass the machine back and forth to stabilize it and thus prevent it from unstitching.
Sew the body of the fabric handbag
Take the piece of fabric and flizeline again to work on the central body of the bag.
First of all place the flap on the 18cm side, right side up, mark the point where to place the lower part of the magnetic button and proceed as before. In the photo you can see how the magnetic button is attached to the inside.
Fold the body of the bag in half on the long 20.5cm side and press, then machine sew the two sides. Right sides together, sew the flap to one side of the bag with a zig-zag stitch, as in the photo.
Insert the bag into the lining inside out as shown in the photo.
Prepare two strips of fabric to attach the shoulder strap. Each strip has a length of approximately 7-8cm and is 4-5cm wide. Folded on the sides by approximately 1cm as shown in the photo, each strip must be sewn along the edge after folding it in two.
After inserting the central body of the bag into the lining, pin the contours of the opening by positioning the two loop-folded strips on the right and left, inserted between the two fabrics. Sew the outline of the bag opening, just below the zig-zag.
At this point, turn the project right side out from the opening left open in the lining and sew the opening right side out with the machine or by hand with a blind stitch. Iron.
Apply the shoulder strap and the fabric bag is finished!
Fold the end of the shoulder strap in half, make two holes with the punch and secure the metal eyelets with the appropriate pliers. Insert the two ends into the snap hooks which will be attached to the side loops sewn to the bag.
