Christmas is coming and for months compulsive seamstresses, who love the magical atmosphere of Christmas, have been sewing, making gifts and decorations.
The Santa Claus Log Cabin It’s a really easy creative sewing project to do. It is very well known online and among patchwork enthusiasts because it is made using the Log Cabin technique, a particular type of patch block.
In practice, a tile is made with strips of fabric that are sewn around a central square, then assembled like a potholder, with backing and padding.
A hook on the top of the hat, allows you to hang the decoration on the tree or in the house.
The central square of the block represents the face of Santa Claus and for this reason a pink or light-colored fabric is required.
The first white strip of fabric is the beard and if you want you can add black for the third round of fabric: it will be the belt of the dress.
With the measurements in this tutorial the finished height of the project is 26 cm and approximately 13 cm wide.
With a square log cabin you get 2 Santas.
Materials and Tools
- strips of Christmas fabric 2.5 cm high for 6 rounds in total
- 1 6cm square of pink or light fabric
- thin ribbon of 15 cm
- 1 square of fabric for the back, approximately 22 cm on each side
- 1 square of fabric for the hat, approximately 22 cm on each side
- needle and thread for the hidden stitch
- 1 square of padding of approximately 23 cm
- patchwork foot or regular foot
ATTENTION: for the tutorial we used the patchwork foot with a 1/4 inch margin, if you use the normal foot the final measurements of the project may be slightly different, as the margin of this foot is slightly larger (0.75 cm) .
Square Log Cabin
Let’s start sewing the fabric strips around the 6cm square.
The technique is that of the Log Cabin, but simplified.
Place a strip, right sides together, on one side of the square, pin and sew.
After sewing, cut off the excess and open the sewn part.
Place the same strip of fabric on the second side of the square, which however also includes the part just added, pin and sew.
Proceed in this way until you have completed the entire turn of the square.
In total, sew 6 turns around the central square, until you obtain a log cabin square measuring approximately 22 cm on each side (using the patchwork foot).
Sew the hat and eyes
After sewing the log cabin square, cut the square needed for the hat part.
Then cut both squares on the diagonal.
Once you have obtained the 4 triangles, sew each Log Cabin triangle to the simple fabric triangle that will form Santa’s hat. Sew along the diagonal line, right sides together.
At this point, place the square thus obtained on a padding square and sew the eyes using thick black embroidery thread and perform the knot stitch.
Apply the hook
After embroidering the eyes, apply the hook to the top of the hat. Fold the ribbon in half and pin it, as seen in the photo, at the top of the square.
Assemble the Santa Claus
At this point, place the square that will form the back of the project on the right side of the Log cabin.
Place the two squares right sides together and sew around the perimeter but leaving an opening for turning.
After sewing, cut out the excess padding, but also the seam allowance of the padding alone to avoid creating bulk on the sides. Cut corners.
Turn right side out. Iron and sew the opening by hand.
Final stitching
To give shape to our Santa Claus Log cabin, roll it up on the hat side and sew the back by hand, joining the two sides.
Our Christmas decoration is now finished!
