A cell phone holder is always handy. There are thousands of them around, all imported, all made of rigid plastic. In my opinion they are ugly and anonymous! So why not make yourself a nice one cell phone case? By choosing the right combination of fabrics you can achieve fantastic results!
What I propose is a basic idea, an unpretentious mobile phone case, but comfortable and safe. You can add a pocket for earphones or a strap to wear it on the wrist and thus keep your mobile phone always at hand. The dimensions are 16×15 cm but you can vary them according to your needs. The paper pattern is given by a rectangle with two beveled corners, so you can modify it as you like.
Materials
The materials you need are few and in small quantities:
- 2 cuts of matching fabric 16x15cm;
- 1 padding cutting 17×16cm;
- a 25cm zip;
- a strip of fabric for binding of approximately 62 cm:
- some cord and a pendant to hang on the zip slider;
- a custom label if you use one;
- hand sewing thread and needle;
- sewing machine with standard stitches;
- Mobile phone holder pattern
Prepare the sandwich
With the word “sandwich” the Anglo-Saxons mean the composition that is created to form a quilt or base fabric, padding and top (cut of upper fabric).
Then cut out the paper pattern that you can download and obtain the respective shapes from the 2 cuts of fabric and the padding.
On the obverse of the cut of fabric that will go inside the cell phone holder sew your personalized label if you use one. I sewed it vertically, along the fold line of the project.
Place the inside fabric inside out, position the padding and place the outside fabric right side up on top. Baste a few stitches to hold everything in place.
Quilt the phone case with the sewing machine
To hold the fabric sandwich together, machine quilt with a motif that you like best, remembering to leave the inside label free from seams. I sewed simple vertical lines.
This operation can easily be done with the normal foot, but if you use the walking foot it is better, to ensure uniform transport of the layers of fabric.
Once the quilting is finished, cut out the excess padding using the pattern to be more precise.
Sew the binding
Cut one strip of fabric approximately 5cm wide and approximately 62cm long. You will need it to sew the edge of the project.
Pin the fabric strip along the right edge of the project and secure with pins or clips. Turn the ends of the strip about 1 cm. Machine sew along the edge.
Now turn the binding inside out, fold it inwards by about 1 cm, fix it with the clips e hand-sewn with invisible stitch. I first fixed the edge of the central body and then that of the base of the project.
Fold in half and secure the zip
Take the zipper and secure it along the edge with clips or baste it. If it’s too long compared to your project, cut it at the bottom and secure the closure with hand stitches as shown in the photo.
I preferred to sew the zip by hand with the invisible stitch, but you can also use the sewing machine and the appropriate zipper foot.
At this point, turn the project inside out and machine sew the base, but without reaching the end. Once the mobile phone holder is right again, machine sew the point where the end of the zip needs to be hidden.
Finally, to give a decorative touch to everything I went over by hand with the straight stitch and I attached a colored wooden bead to the slider of the zipper.
