Tired of the usual plastic clothespin holders that break so easily as if they were made of porcelain? For lovers of creative sewing the problem is already as good as solved! So there you are an idea on how to make a fabric clothespin holder.
I got the original paper pattern from the issue Spring 2014 of the American magazine Stitch which you can also purchase in digital version, otherwise draw the paper pattern by hand and proceed as described below. Here is one free tutorial very easy!
Materials for making
Here are the materials to make the clothespin holder:
- 4 cuts of fabric (your choice of patterns and combinations);
- a decorative button
- adhesive backing
- bias fantasy (read HERE how to apply bias tape!)
- 2 strips of white non-adhesive velcro
Creative sewing tutorial
First of all cut out the paper pattern. If you don’t want to buy the magazine, just draw the shape of a drop that has the dimensions of approximately 29x43cm but if you have a lot of clothespins to store, use plenty of centimetres.
Obtain 2 whole shapes of the clothespin holder (one on the internal fabric cut and one on the external one). Obtain others 2 shapes with a round opening (one on the fabric cut for the inside and one on the outside). Crop a rectangle with a curved side on a single piece of fabric.
First of all apply the backing film on the 2 pieces of the clothespin holder. For each piece (front and back) the fliseline is positioned between the 2 fabrics. Sew the border to the rectangle and position it as shown in the photo on the side that will be the inside of the clothespin holder.
Now it’s necessary machine sew the bias of the opening and apply on what will be the front part 2 Velcro strips for closing the upper arm of the clothespin holder on the clothesline. I first positioned the Velcro with double-sided tape and then sewed it on the edges. Also apply the decorative button as in photo.
Finally proceed to union of the 2 pieces by sewing around the bias.
