Summer arrives and the villages of Italy are filled with colors and stalls offering handmade creative sewing projects colored and made with so much passion by many of you who have the desire to share your love for needle and thread with lovers of handmade.
Sometimes you have little time to create simple projects that can also be sold at a price accessible to the public, so here’s a simple but effective idea.
With this tutorial I offer you some simple ideas to have fun making, perhaps even with the help of your children some simple, but colorful felt key rings. All you need to do is find thin sheets of felt or felt, some colored embroidery thread, buttons of any color and shape, wooden or ceramic beads, ribbons, metal rings, paper shapes to cut out and lots and lots of imagination.
Get rid of all the materials that you have forgotten in your sewing workshop and recycle everything to make cute, colorful and imaginative felt key rings, which, well packaged, with your personalized label, will make a great impression on the shop counters. hobby markets.
Materials:
1. Colorful circles with a button heart
The basis of these felt keychains that I propose is a square with side 7 cm but obviously you can give vent to all your creativity by inventing and using different shapes and sizes.
In the pattern attached above you will find the templates that were used to make the key rings in the photo and you can start from these to start trying your hand at the work, but as mentioned you can give vent to all your imagination.
To make these key rings with concentric circles, I chose a light blue base to then combine 3 circles together which will be sewn with the technique of free motion or of freehand embroidery with the machine to sew. If you are not familiar with free motion you can use the normal zig-zag or straight stitch, even if you will have to fight with the transport of the machine which will make it complicated, but not impossible, to rotate the felt during sewing.
Apply the button by hand. You can repeat the same operation on both sides of the key ring or decorate the second side in a different way, perhaps just with beads sewn in a scattered way.
Pass a piece of ribbon through a metal ring and machine sew it in the center of one side of the square.
At this point, match the 2 parts of the key ring together, wrong side to wrong side, and place a square of padding in the middle to give thickness to the project.
Secure everything with clips and start sewing the two parts by hand with the blanket stitch using embroidery thread.
2. Wooden button flowers
Another key ring can be made using colored wooden or resin buttons like the ones you see in the photo. Then all you need is some cotton embroidery threads and a few simple stitches to obtain a colorful effect.
I simply embroidered the stems of the flowers in grass stitch and with a simple hand straight stitch I traced the outline of the flowers.
3. A pentagon flourished in applique
Another example of decoration that can be used to make these felt key rings is the one with the fabric applique.
You draw the shape on a specific double-sided sheet of paper for this operation, which is ironed on a piece of fabric. Cut out the shape, remove the paper as if for a sticker and iron it onto the felt, being careful to use a not too hot iron.
Then I decorated with beads and small colored buttons. I machine stitched some corner seams to create another geometric figure.
4. Colorful balloons and small buttons
For this last type of key ring I thought of colored felt circles with a heart formed by a colored button and a machine-sewn outline with a contrasting colored thread, which would highlight the combination of colors I chose.
To create the key ring, the same composition phases are always followed: application of the ribbon inserted into the metal ring, use of the padding square and hand stitching of the edge with festoon stitch.
Have fun making baskets of colored felt keychains to sell or give away during your flea markets!
