I know that when it comes to choosing your first serger, the choice can be quite difficult .

In particular, it is used to finish (overcast) stretch fabrics such as lycra, jersey, jersey , i.e. fabrics that are very difficult to work with the sewing machine. This allows you to save time and obtain a professional result.

It is an essential tool for anyone who wants to create high-quality clothing and other sewing projects.

The serger and stretch fabrics

The serger is particularly useful when working with stretch fabrics, such as jersey, lycra, jersey and other similar materials.

These fabrics can be difficult to sew with a traditional sewing machine due to their stretchiness and tendency to warp during sewing.

The serger, on the other hand, is designed to effectively and precisely manage these types of fabrics, offering several advantages:

1. Elastic seams : the seams made with the overlocker are more elastic than those made with a traditional sewing machine. The technical characteristics of a serger

The overlocker has a very different structure from a sewing machine.

When it comes to choosing a serger it’s important to have a clear budget in mind , but at the same time you shouldn’t sacrifice quality to save a few euros .

There are many models available on the market, with prices that can vary greatly. We can divide them into:

• low-end serger, less than $400.00;
• mid-range serger, between $400.00 and $750.00;
• high-end serger, over $750.00;

In general, low-end sergers are available at very affordable prices, but may not be as sturdy and durable as mid-range or high-end ones.

However, if you are a beginner and just want to try the serger for the first time, a low-end serger might be a great choice for you.

Another important thing to consider when choosing an overlocker is that, unlike sewing machines, once you buy a good quality overlocker, you will rarely need to change it .

However, it is not always necessary to opt for the most expensive model to get a quality serger.

Overlockers on offer in supermarkets: when the very low price meets learning

Supermarkets and large retailers, such as Lidl, often offer sewing machines and overlockers at extremely affordable prices. While these sergers may not have the same performance and features as higher-end models, they can still be a viable option for those who want to learn how to use a serger without spending a lot.

Overlockers offered in supermarkets are usually lesser-known brands or ” white label ” brands produced specifically for large retailers. Typically, these machines come with the basic features needed to learn sewing techniques and become familiar with how a serger works.

If you have already purchased an overlocker on offer from a supermarket like Lidl, don’t worry. You can still use it to learn how to use the machine and to do simple sewing projects. However, it is important to keep in mind that the quality and durability of these machines may be lower than mid-range or high-end models.

Low-end serger

Low-end sergers offer an affordable option for those who want to get started with this versatile tool without breaking the bank. Among the most used within my sewing community 

Once known for their quality and innovation, these brands are now often associated with low-end products. For example, the Singer, Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff brands are all owned by the SVP group ( source Wikipedia ).

Mid-range sergers represent an ideal balance between advanced features and an affordable price.

These machines offer better performance than lower-end models and are suitable for both beginners and more experienced tailors. Among the most used within my community: Brother 2104D, Juki 654DE and Bernette Funlock B44.

High-end serger: when unparalleled quality and performance justify the investment

High-end sergers are designed to offer the highest quality and performance, meeting the needs of the most demanding tailors and industry professionals.

Among the most renowned high-end brands we find Bernina, Juki and Janome , each with their own peculiarities and distinctive characteristics.
